Methodology

How we rate prices

The price label on each listing compares its price with comparable cars for sale on MotorCanarias right now. It is a guide, not a valuation.

How it is calculated

  1. We take the active cars on MotorCanarias of the same make whose model year is within 3 years of the car in the listing.
  2. If there are fewer than 5 comparable cars, we show no label: the sample would be too small.
  3. We count how many of those cars cost more than the one in the listing.
  4. That proportion determines the label. It is recalculated every time the page loads, so it changes as cars come and go.

The labels

  • Great priceCheaper than at least 75% of comparable cars.
  • Good priceCheaper than at least half of comparable cars.
  • Fair priceCheaper than at least 25% of comparable cars.
  • No labelIn the most expensive 25% of its group, or without enough comparable cars.

Limits

  • We can't see the car's condition, history or equipment: a well-kept or highly specified car may be worth more.
  • We compare with the same make, not the same model or version: a pricier model of the same make can make another look cheap.
  • Reference prices are advertised asking prices, not agreed sale prices.
  • If there aren't enough comparable cars, we'd rather show no label than an unreliable one.

Frequently asked questions

What does “Great price” mean on a listing?

That the car is cheaper than at least 75% of the comparable cars listed on MotorCanarias: same make, and a model year no more than 3 years apart.

Why do some listings have no price label?

Because there are fewer than 5 comparable cars to give a reliable reference, or because the car's price is in the most expensive quarter of its group.

Does the label guarantee that the car is in good condition?

No. It only compares prices. Condition, service history, equipment and the exact version can justify a different price. Always see the car in person and ask for the DGT vehicle report.
